Put the Homelessness Agency CEO Search on Pause, Former Governor and Seattle Chamber Leader Say
By Angelika Nowak
Former Washington Governor Gary Locke and Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce CEO Rachel Smith are calling for a pause in the search for a new leader of the agency responsible for addressing homelessness in Seattle.
In a joint letter to the King County Council, Locke and Smith expressed concerns about the current search process for a new CEO of the King County Regional Homelessness Authority. The agency was formed last year to oversee the region’s response to homelessness and coordinate services across King County.
Locke and Smith argue that putting the search on hold would allow the agency to focus on immediate needs and address ongoing challenges in the homelessness crisis. They also suggest that a thorough assessment of the agency’s operations and structure is necessary before hiring a new CEO.
The call for a pause comes amid criticism of the agency’s handling of the homelessness crisis and questions about its effectiveness in addressing the root causes of homelessness. The agency has faced challenges in meeting its goals and delivering results, leading to calls for greater accountability and transparency.
The King County Council has not yet responded to the request to pause the CEO search. However, Locke and Smith’s letter has sparked a debate about the future of the agency and the need for a more strategic and coordinated approach to addressing homelessness in the region.
As the homelessness crisis continues to escalate in Seattle and across King County, the call for a pause in the CEO search reflects growing concerns about the agency’s ability to effectively address the complex and multifaceted issues contributing to homelessness.
