Fast-food chain Chipotle has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the city of Seattle, over alleged violations of the city’s Secure Scheduling and Paid Sick Time Ordinances. The popular restaurant chain has agreed to pay a hefty settlement to resolve the matter.
The lawsuit, filed in 2021, accused Chipotle of numerous violations of the city’s labor laws, including failure to provide employees with adequate notice of their schedules and denying workers access to paid sick leave. The settlement requires Chipotle to pay a total of $2.2 million to current and former employees who were affected by the alleged violations.
In addition to the financial settlement, Chipotle has also agreed to make changes to its scheduling and sick leave policies to ensure compliance with the city’s ordinances. This includes providing employees with at least two weeks’ notice of their schedules and allowing workers to accrue paid sick leave from the date of hire.
City officials have hailed the settlement as a victory for workers’ rights and a step forward in ensuring fair treatment for restaurant employees. Chipotle, for its part, has stated that it is committed to complying with all applicable labor laws and regulations.
The settlement underscores the importance of companies adhering to local labor laws and treating their employees fairly. It serves as a reminder that businesses must prioritize the well-being of their workers and ensure they are provided with the rights and protections they are entitled to under the law.
