LOS ANGELES (AP) — Convicted Southern California con artist sentenced in an $18 million cannabis fraud case pleaded guilty.

Pablo Gonzalez, 44, of Alhambra entered the pleas Friday in Los Angeles to five felony charges, according to a statement from the California Attorney General’s Office. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison when he is sentenced in January.

Gonzalez and his co-conspirators solicited investments from victims across the United States for what was supposed to be a licensed cannabis distribution business in California. Instead of using the money for the business, Gonzalez and his co-defendants spent the funds on themselves.

The scheme defrauded investors of nearly $18 million, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Gonzalez remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail. His lawyer, H. Dean Steward, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
