Senator Edward Markey introduced a bill on Monday that would ensure access to birth control for people seeking asylum at the southern border. Markey said in a statement that “reproductive rights are human rights” and that everyone, regardless of immigration status, should have the ability to make decisions about their own bodies. Advocates for immigrants’ rights have praised the bill, stating that access to birth control is a crucial aspect of reproductive health care and should not be denied to those in detention. They argue that people seeking asylum are already facing numerous challenges and should not be further burdened by lack of access to basic health services.
